The Problem
We noticed that as South Africa moved towards cashless payments, many service workers were losing significant income. Car guards, restaurant staff, and other tip-dependent workers were struggling as customers increasingly paid by card but had no cash for tips.
Understanding the Need
We spoke to hundreds of workers across South Africa - from Johannesburg car guards to Cape Town waiters. The story was consistent: digital payments were reducing their daily income, but existing solutions were too expensive or complicated.
Building the Solution
We designed TipByTap specifically for South African workers and high-footfall environments. The model combines card-machine convenience, QR flexibility, branded visibility, practical onboarding, and WhatsApp-based support.
Launching TipByTap
Today, TipByTap serves workers across multiple cities, processing thousands of tips monthly. We're proud to help workers earn more while making it easier for customers to show appreciation for good service.
